We commonly get asked about what the difference is between chiropractors and osteopaths, so we thought this article might help. In truth, we are more alike than we are different.
Both chiropractors and osteopaths need to be registered with their respective regulatory bodies in order to hold their titles. Chiropractors are registered with the General Chiropractic Council and osteopaths are registered with the General Osteopathic Council. It is illegal for someone to call themselves an osteopath or chiropractor without being registered.
Both chiropractors and osteopaths undertake a degree course in order to become qualified and have to complete ongoing continued professional development each year.
Both professions deal with issues relating to the joints, muscles and nerves of the body.
The way our clinic works is that Polly and Arwel work as a team, in that you can see either practitioner depending on your preference and availability. This is because Polly and Arwel treat very similarly, have access to your treatment notes and regularly undergo training together.
Even within a profession you don’t necessarily have two chiropractors (or osteopaths) who work the same way, and you will notice a few differences in each practitioner’s individual approach. Generally speaking, chiropractors tend to focus more on the spine and its relation to other joints, whilst osteopaths tend to have a broader approach.
In regard to treatment, both chiropractors work with the joints and the muscles, and adapt each treatment to each person.
Deciding whether to see a chiropractor or an osteopath is your own personal choice, either way you are in safe hands.
Our practitioners work closely together and often co-manage cases and cross refer.
If you aren’t sure, ring the clinic and ask to speak to a practitioner who will be able to guide you.
